About The Century We Lived
The Century We Lived tells the big events of the twentieth century from the American living room. We want to show how a day felt to the people who were there, and then bring out the documented parts almost nobody heard about at the time.
How we make the films
Each film starts with a claims ledger, which is a numbered list of every fact we plan to say on screen and the record it comes from. We favor primary sources such as government documents, official reports, newspapers of the day and archival film. If we cannot source something, it stays out of the film. Every film page links to its full source list.
Most of what you see is archival material from NASA, the National Archives and other public collections, along with maps and graphics we draw ourselves. When we use a short AI illustration of a generic scene, we label it on screen and say so in the description.
A new film every week
We publish one film a week on YouTube. Some films come with a printable companion guide that goes deeper into the timeline and the documents. The guides help pay for the research.
Who we are
The films are narrated by Michael Strange.
